Teaching Philosophy

My main objective is to teach students how to teach themselves. This means that I provide the student with the tools and guidance required to flourish as a successful trumpeter. I believe that students should become self-sufficient so that when they encounter technical issues, the student may resolve the issue efficiently without relying on a teacher. By experimenting with ideas and techniques and determining if they achieve the desired effect, the need for a teacher gradually diminishes and the student transitions into the professional world.

I have a mixed background of teachers, which has greatly influenced my approach to playing the trumpet. I have taken the best aspects of each teacher and combined them to make an approach that works for me. This unique approach allows me to tailor the lesson to each student’s specific needs.

I encourage students to become proficient in many different musical styles. We no longer have the luxury to be only a soloist, orchestral, jazz, pops, ballet, opera (etc.) player. The modern trumpeter often has to play all of these styles on a regular basis, which is why I prefer to teach various styles to my students. I also heavily emphasize the ability to transpose and sight-read. These two abilities are easily the most useful for successful playing.
